Lexus introduced its all-new Direct4 gearbox earlier in December for hybrid and all-electric models coming to Lexus in the near future.
The new gearbox is designed to optimize the particular performance of an electrified powertrain while maintaining the comfort, performance and efficiency typically associated with Lexus products. The Direct4 gearbox will be installed in a vehicle very soon as Lexus took advantage of the model unveiling to give a first look at an upcoming concept.
The Direct4 transmission is in line with the LF-30 prototype unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show and the Lexus Electrification strategy. This new philosophy aims to offer a fundamental leap forward in electric performance and the development of electrified vehicles.
The gearbox is optimized to ensure perfect and variable distribution between the front and rear axles. The powertrain uses an e-axle placed at the front and rear and paired by a transaxle providing high torque to the axle best calibrated to receive it. The Direct4 transmission also has a direct effect on the braking force.
The development of the gearbox is in keeping with the "Lexus driving signature" philosophy of delivering performance that is both dynamic and linear, ensuring fast torque delivery as well as linear.
Simply put, Direct4 will be at the heart of upcoming Lexus electric and hybrid vehicles and will not only be able to improve performance, but also provide optimum comfort.
