The Lexus Hybrid Drive
The Lexus UX is available in only one version, the UX 250h, which is powered by a hybrid system composed of a 2.0L engine and an electric motor. The addition of this motor is beneficial to the efficiency and to the performances, since it has a combined output of 181 horsepower and it is capable of achieving consumption figures as low as 5,7 L/100 km in the city and 6,2 L/100 km on the highway. Since it benefits from Lexus’ extensive experience in hybrid systems, this powertrain is very smooth and its reliable. The smoothness and the efficiency are both helped by the system’s capability of operating in an electric only mode at low speeds.
The drive mode select system
The Lexus UX comes standard with a feature that allows the driver to choose between many drive modes in order to better suit the driving conditions and their preferences. In order to maximise every drop of fuel, the Eco mode deceases the responsiveness of the accelerator and tunes the powertrain in order to reduce the harshness of accelerations and thus the quantity of fuel needed. To make it even more helpful, the Eco mode reduces the output of the air conditioning system, which saves fuel and energy. Another available drive mode, the EV mode, is focused on using only the electric motor to move the UX. This mode makes it much easier to drive without having the gasoline engine kick-in to help with accelerations. Of course, even in EV mode, if the need to accelerate quickly arises, depressing the accelerator fully will prompt the gasoline engine to start and the maximum accelerating power will be made available in an instant.
