Three ways the new 2023 Lexus RX is different from the previous generation

The Lexus RX Series is getting a full-bore redesign for 2023 and that’s a pretty big deal because through its 30 years of existence, the RX line remains one of the most popular and high-selling lines the marque has ever released. It is one of the pioneers in the mid-sized luxury crossover segment and continues to be a leader in the genre. That’s a trend that should only improve for 2023 with the numerous stylistic, technological and powertrain additions the model gets for its latest generation.

Style

The first thing one notices about the new RX in its latest iteration is how in profile, its long hood and cab rearward look suggest a much more athletic vehicle overall that breaks the mold of the traditional crossover. In all-new RX500h spec, meanwhile, the RX gets 21-inch wheels for the first time ever and the GA-K platform on which it sits allows for a lower centre of gravity, lower curb weight and improved handling. So not only does it look more athletic, it is more athletic.

Performance

You are spoilt for choice in this department as there are no fewer than three available powertrains, with a fourth to come soon: a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder, two hybrid four-cylinder options and soon, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) as well.

The RX500h is the performance jewel of the group, offering the 2.4-litre turbo four combining with an electric motor to produce 367 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. All that juice is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, if you’re feeling just a little more “sprightly”.

The base RX350 model may not have quite the power of the RX500h, but the 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque it does make are enough to get you up and running in short order. The hybrid model, meanwhile, is good 246 hp and 233 lb-ft but more importantly, averages a fuel consumption of just 7.1L/100 km.

Regarding the PHEV model: while we don’t know the full details on this powertrain, we can expect about 60 km of all-EV driving, if the figures made by the new NX 450h+ are any indication.

Tech

Technophiles will be happy to know that the 2023 Lexus RX will be getting the latest version of Lexus’ infotainment system, now called “Lexus Interface”. It features a responsive 14” central display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new RX will also get Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 with all the active safety technologies – forward collision assist, pedestrian detection, lane-centering assist and more – we’ve come to expect from Lexus products.
